Assignment: Designing a Teacher Training Program Using the ASSURE Model

Assignment description and purpose:

The purpose of this assignment was to design a full training program for teachers who work with out-of-school children. The goal of this assignment was to help teachers move from traditional teaching to more active and engaging teaching practices by using digital tools. These teachers lack the ability to create interactive e-learning lessons.

Skills gained as an instructional designer:

I gained important skills by understanding teachers’ needs through conducting a needs assessment which is essential to identify the challenges and determine where to start. I also learned how to design a complete instructional solution using the ASSURE model, which helped to organize the instruction step by step and connect learning theories such as constructivism and connectivism to real-life practices. Moreover, I realized that learning is not only about measuring the outcomes, but it is also about improving them. I used different kinds of assessments, such as peer feedback as a formative strategy during the training and final tasks as a summative evaluation to measure learning outcomes to enhance the learning outcomes.

The main strength of this assignment:

One of the strengths of this artifact is that it follows a full instructional design process from analyzing learners’ needs, writing the objectives, designing and developing the content to the implementation and evaluation. This assignment can be linked to ​EDUC331: Advanced Instructional Methodology because it includes many teaching methods and practice-based activities that teachers can use to improve students’ learning. The use of the ASSURE model provided a well-structured plan to deliver effective and engaging learning.

Recommendations for Enhancing the Assignment:

If I were to improve this assignment, I would strengthen the inclusive learning aspect such as adding audios, visuals, and more explanations and I would design the training in a more flexible way including self-paced learning.
