EDUC 352: Evaluation and Assessment

Assignment: Fairness in Classroom Assessment: A Learning Theory Perspective (PPT Presentation)

This assignment aligns with the following program learning outcomes:

LO3: Analyze and design assessment(s) to evaluate effective teaching and learning.

LO9: Create effective digital instructional materials and online learning environments.

Assignment description and purpose:

The purpose of this assignment is to design a presentation about the fairness of assessment based on Herman and Cook (2020). The assignment emphasized the importance of fairness in assessment to ensure inclusion with valid results and reduce bias in assessments. The major objectives in this presentation were quality versus equity, assessment bias, accommodations for learners, and the teaching learning assessment cycle. The main objective was to translate this theoretical part of Herman and Cook into a practical strategy that influences teachers’ assessments and students’ learning outcomes.

Skills gained as an instructional designer:

This assignment is aligned with EDUC341- Theories of Learning in Educational Technologies, where assessments are part of the learning, not a separate learning activity, as assessments play a critical role in supporting students’ understanding of the course rather than making judgments. By completing this assignment, I gained skills that contributed to my growth as an instructional designer. Firstly, by understanding that assessment in learning should be fair by giving opportunities for learning to all students from different levels and styles to ensure diversity and equity. Secondly, by applying theoretical knowledge into instructional design practice as designing the presentation required transforming academic content into structured learning.

The main strength of this assignment:

The main strength of this assignment was transforming theory into practice. This was achieved by linking fairness in assessment to classroom applications and its impact on designing better learning opportunities that respect inclusion and learner-centered evaluation.

Recommendations for Enhancing the Assignment:

If I were to improve this artifact, I would add more real-life examples to show different cases in different grades were learners can make more connections to their experience.
